The highly anticipated sequel to the 2006 comedy, Malamaal Weekly, is set to feature substantial changes both behind and in front of the camera. Director Priyadarshan has officially confirmed that he will not be returning to direct the new installment.
Priyadarshan stated his decision to Variety India, explicitly mentioning, "I have decided not to do any sequel." This marks a significant shift for the franchise, which he helmed originally.
Taking over the directorial reins is Amit Joshi, who previously co-directed the romantic comedy Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya. Reports also indicate that actor Riteish Deshmukh, a prominent figure in the first film, will not be part of the sequel's cast.
While the creative team is introducing new talent and a fresh narrative, the makers intend to preserve the core essence of the original film. Elements like the small-town setting, the allure of financial windfalls, and comedic misunderstandings are expected to be retained.
