In the lead-up to the 16th annual DOC NYC film festival, set to take place from November 12-20, 2025, some major news has emerged. Acclaimed activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai and 'Succession' actor Arian Moayed have joined the Afghanistan documentary 'Champions of the Golden Valley' as executive producers.
The DOC NYC 2025 lineup will feature a diverse slate of 200 films, including 30 world premieres and 34 U.S. premieres. The festival will kick off on November 12 with the U.S. premiere of Christopher Nelius' 'Whistle,' about champion whistlers. Two Centerpiece screenings have also been announced - Tia Lessin and Carl Deal's 'Steal This Story, Please!' about Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman, and the world premiere of Celia Aniskovich's 'The Merchants of Joy,' which offers a joyful look at the five families who dominate New York City's Christmas tree trade.
The festival will close on November 20 with the NYC premiere of Ivy Meeropol's 'Ask E. Jean,' about writer and cultural icon E. Jean Carroll and her lawsuits against former President Donald Trump. Other highlights include world premieres of films exploring topics like school shootings, the African country of Ghana's buried cinema history, and the heydays of LA's Sunset Marquis hotel.
