Summary
- Gandhi series premieres at TIFF 2025 to standing ovation
- Pratik Gandhi stars as Mahatma Gandhi
- Hansal Mehta's team spent their own money to attend the premiere

In October 2025, the highly anticipated web series Gandhi, directed by Hansal Mehta and starring Pratik Gandhi as Mahatma Gandhi, had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The show, a collaboration between Mehta and Applause Entertainment, received a standing ovation from the audience, a rare occurrence at the typically reserved TIFF.
Mehta, who was present at the premiere, was visibly moved by the audience's reaction. He noted that TIFF is not known for such enthusiastic displays of appreciation, with the patrons often remaining more reserved. However, for Gandhi, the crowd spontaneously rose to their feet and applauded, leaving Mehta in tears.
What further touched Mehta was the dedication of his team, who went to great lengths to attend the premiere. Even his assistant directors spent their own money to be present for this momentous occasion. Mehta also revealed that the team, including his cinematographer and writer, made the trip to Canada, despite the country being neither nearby nor cheap, and securing a visa being a challenge.
The overwhelming response at TIFF has generated tremendous excitement for the Gandhi series, which Mehta and his team have been working on for the past 3.5 years. The first two episodes were showcased at the festival, and the remaining episodes are currently in post-production, with a release expected in the coming months.
