Prince Maekar Targaryen, portrayed by Sam Spruell, faces profound struggles in *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*. His reign precedes that of the mothership series by 90 years and follows *House of the Dragon* by 80 years. He is a widowed father whose parenting has faltered, particularly with his sons Daeron, Aerion, and Aegon.
Maekar lived in the shadow of his popular brother, Prince Baelor, the heir to the Iron Throne. His personal failings culminated during the Ashford Meadow jousting tournament, where a dispute involving his sons and Ser Duncan the Tall led to a "trial of seven."
During this trial, Maekar accidentally struck his brother Baelor, who later died from a head wound. Maekar insists it was an accident, a claim actor Spruell suggests is self-delusion and a tactic of corrupt power. Despite his brother's death, Maekar's primary concern remains his youngest son, Aegon, whom he views as his last hope for a worthy heir.
He attempts to control Aegon's future by offering Ser Duncan a position at Summerhall to train him as a squire. When Dunk rejects this, Maekar refuses to let Aegon travel with him, fearing he would live like a peasant. This controlling behavior stems from Maekar's deep-seated fear of failing as a father.
Aegon, however, secretly leaves to join Dunk, seeing Dunk as a better paternal figure and moral guide. This choice profoundly affects Maekar, highlighting his own shortcomings and the emotional distance between him and his son. Spruell hopes this humiliation for Maekar will be explored in future seasons.
Actor Sam Spruell will not appear in the second season, though he leaves the door open for future involvement. He also discusses the adaptation process, noting the current season closely follows George R.R. Martin's *Tales of Dunk and Egg* novellas, which fans have appreciated.
