Canadian comedian Mae Martin recently completed their inaugural North American tour, describing the experience as surprisingly positive. Initially apprehensive about touring the United States as a Canadian trans individual, Martin found the audiences "incredible" and developed a fondness for America.
Martin highlighted the strong sense of community and shared enjoyment experienced with fans. The tour involved waking up in different cities daily, with Martin seeking out unique local attractions. Post-show meet-and-greets led to an abundance of fan-gifted trinkets, prompting Martin to consider opening a museum for the items.
Despite finding bus sleeping arrangements challenging and feeling "vaguely delirious" at times, Martin viewed the exhaustion as contributing to the tour's overall fun. A particular highlight was visiting Boston and meeting a 102-year-old woman named Patricia Bartevian, whose life story Martin found captivating.
In addition to their comedy career, Martin hosts the "Handsome" podcast and is currently working on new music and a Netflix special. They underscore comedy's essential role in modern society, stating it helps "point out the absurdity of everything" and encourages critical thinking by fostering a relaxed state conducive to expanded perspectives.
