Madhur Bhandarkar Slams Bollywood's Vanity Van Wars
16 Mar
Summary
- Filmmaker criticizes industry's lack of unity and double standards.
- Producers often inflate vanity van numbers for prominent actors.
- Actors sometimes lack commitment for challenging film roles.

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, speaking at the Red Lorry Film Festival 2026 in Mumbai, expressed concerns over escalating costs and 'entourage culture' within Bollywood. He pointed out a significant lack of unity, particularly concerning vanity van provisions, where producers might complain about actors requesting numerous vans but readily provide even more for prominent stars. Bhandarkar suggested a need for industry-wide agreements on actor remuneration and perks to curb such practices.
Bhandarkar also addressed the commitment levels of actors towards challenging roles. He praised actors like Ranveer Singh for his dedication to films such as 'Dhurandhar' and Ranbir Kapoor for his conviction in 'Animal.' He contrasted this with a perceived reluctance among other actors to undertake demanding parts or narratives similar to 'Pushpa,' suggesting a missing conviction for difficult paths in the industry.
