Madhubani, Bihar, has welcomed its first Shilpgram (craft village) in Jitwarpur, Rahika block. The inauguration marks a significant push to preserve and promote Mithila's traditional handicrafts like Madhubani paintings and paper mache. This initiative is part of the Union textile ministry's National Handicrafts Development Programme, collaborating with the Bihar Museum.
The Craft Village development involves an investment exceeding Rs9 crore, with 80% funded by the Central government and 20% by the Bihar Museum. Phase one includes a guest house, craft stalls, and landscaping. Plans also feature a grand Madhubani-artwork entrance, renovated ponds, paved roads, and street lighting, with homes to be whitewashed for artists to paint motifs.
Jitwarpur is globally recognized for its artists, including three Padma Shri recipients. With nearly 90% of its population engaged in handicrafts, the village functions as a vibrant art hub. The project, expected to be completed within a year, also aims to extend development to nearby art villages, fostering a wider artistic ecosystem.
