Macon Blair Returns to Sundance with 'The Shitheads'

Filmmaker Macon Blair has returned to the Sundance Film Festival in 2026 with his new movie, "The Shitheads." This marks his second appearance at Sundance, following his 2017 success with "I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore." Blair described his return as a "pleasant, wonderful surprise," especially given the rapid production of "The Shitheads," which was filmed over the summer.

The film is described as a "raucous and wildly entertaining descent into madness." It stars Dave Franco and O'Shea Jackson Jr. as chaperones tasked with transporting an increasingly psychotic character, portrayed by Mason Thames. Nicholas Braun, who has been attached to the project since reading the script in 2017, highlighted its unique and explosive nature.

Dave Franco, a longtime admirer of Blair's work, actively pursued the opportunity to collaborate. He initially discussed "The Shitheads" in 2017 but was too young for certain roles then. Franco later rejoined as a producer, helping to secure funding for the film. O'Shea Jackson Jr. joined the cast at Franco's recommendation, taking on a role previously considered for other actors.

Kiernan Shipka, also in a supporting role, commended Blair's directing style, noting his unexpected yet brilliant suggestions that enhanced the surprise and originality of the film. The ensemble cast also includes Peter Dinklage, with whom Blair reconnected after their previous Sundance meeting.
