The Dutch-Belgian co-production "Maalstroom" has recently wrapped filming. The drama follows Jan, a barge skipper facing financial ruin, who accepts an urgent shipment of sand from Dunkirk to Rotterdam. His desperate plan goes awry when he discovers 11 refugees concealed within his cargo.
As Jan navigates the canals, the presence of his unexpected passengers compels him to re-evaluate his own life and perspective. The film stars Jim Deddes as Jan, Tenzing Woing as his deckhand Edward, and Somali-American actor Barkhad Abdi as Bahdoon. Abdi is widely recognized for his Oscar-nominated role in "Captain Phillips."
Director Teddy Cherim aims to highlight the surreal and often bizarre nature of Europe's handling of migrants, noting the inherent humor in the onboard situation. He previously directed series like "Joardy Season" and the VR documentary "Meet the Soldier."
Producer Marten van Warmerdam emphasizes the film's relevance and its ability to humanize the migration issue. "Maalstroom" aims to present a tangible story by showcasing the fears and shared journey of those aboard the ship, bringing the complex issue of migration down to a human scale.
The film is a co-production between Graniet Film and Czar Film & TV, with support from various film funds and broadcasters. Paradiso Filmed Entertainment is slated for a Benelux release next year.
