27 Apr
Summary
- Indian spy thriller Dhurandhar portrayed Lyari with crime elements.
- Pakistani film Mera Lyari focuses on resilience and women's football.
- Mera Lyari aims to counter negative Indian propaganda about Lyari.

Lyari, a district in Karachi, Pakistan, has recently captured significant cinematic attention. The Indian spy thriller "Dhurandhar," released on December 5, 2025, utilized Lyari as a backdrop for themes of gang conflict and organized crime. While successful in India, its portrayal of Lyari as lawless drew criticism in Pakistan.
In response, the Pakistani film "Mera Lyari" offers a different narrative. Directed by Abu Aleeha, this sports drama highlights resilience and community spirit through a women's football team. The film stars Ayesha Omar as a coach returning to mentor young girls, overcoming social challenges. This project has received support from the Sindh Information Department.
Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon described "Mera Lyari" as Pakistan's counter to "negative propaganda," contrasting it with "Dhurandhar" and promising to show Lyari's "peace, prosperity, and pride." Despite this positioning, "Mera Lyari" differs in genre, focusing on hope and empowerment rather than espionage.
The film's international premiere is set for May 2, 2026, at the 28th UK Asian Film Festival in London. Director Abu Aleeha noted that 80% of the cast are Lyari residents, emphasizing the film's authenticity and its aim to showcase the area's true spirit globally before its domestic release.
