18 Feb
Summary
- A 1970 LS Lowry sketch will be auctioned next month.
- The artwork was previously raffled for charity in 1971.
- The sketch is valued between £25,000 and £35,000.

A significant sketch by the renowned artist L.S. Lowry, drawn in 1970, is scheduled for auction on March 5th. This artwork, titled 'A Harassed Mother,' holds a unique history as it was raffled off for charity on January 21, 1971. Lowry had donated the sketch to raise funds for the L.S. Lowry Room at Salford Corporation Art Gallery.
Initially won by Professor W.J. Orville Thomas, the sketch is now valued by auctioneers Wilson 55 at between £25,000 and £35,000. While Lowry is celebrated for his paintings of working-class life in the north of England, critics suggest his sketches offer a different perspective on his talent.
Also included in the auction are copies of speeches from Professor Thomas's engagements. These speeches relate to Lowry and fellow Salford painter Harold Riley receiving Honorary Doctorates of Letters from the University of Salford in 1975 and 1979. Professor Thomas was instrumental in art acquisitions for the university and the Manchester area.
