Summary
- Actress Lauren Tewes played cruise director on 'The Love Boat'
- She was dropped from the show in 1984 due to her cocaine use
- Co-star Fred Grandy regrets not supporting Tewes during her addiction

In 2025, new details have emerged about the behind-the-scenes drama of the beloved 1970s and 80s TV series 'The Love Boat'. Actress Lauren Tewes, who played the role of cruise director Julie McCoy since the show's debut in 1977, was dropped from the series in 1984 due to her cocaine use.
Tewes has now opened up about her addiction, admitting that she started using cocaine shortly after landing the job on 'The Love Boat'. She described the "incredible euphoria" the drug gave her, saying it made her feel "stronger, braver". However, her drug use ultimately led to her being let go from the show.
Tewes' co-star Fred Grandy, who portrayed the ship's purser Gopher, expressed regret for not supporting Tewes during that difficult time. Grandy acknowledged that the production was a "very good time", with the show traveling to exotic locations around the world. However, he recognized that the entertainment industry often involves the use of "controlled substances".

Tewes did return for a handful of episodes in the show's final two seasons in 1986 and 1987, but she was no longer the mainstay she had once been. Her addiction battle, which was treated much differently in that era, had taken a toll on her career.
