Scottish writer-director Louis Paxton is gaining industry recognition with his feature debut, "The Incomer." The film, a dark comedy-drama, stars prominent actors including Domhnall Gleeson and Gayle Rankin, and is backed by Focus Features and Universal Pictures International.
Paxton has been named to the 2026 U.K. BAFTA Breakthrough list, an honor supported by Netflix. This recognition highlights his emergence as a significant new talent.
The narrative of "The Incomer" unfolds on a secluded Scottish island, focusing on siblings who have lived in isolation for decades. Their world shifts with the arrival of Daniel, a council worker tasked with moving them to the mainland.
Drawing from personal experiences, Paxton's mother's family hails from Scotland's Orkney islands. He noted that aspects of his own sibling relationship and observations of island communities' unique cultures and challenges influenced the film's themes of heritage and the difficult decision to leave one's ancestral home.
Paxton emphasized that the script's strength attracted the A-list cast, including Domhnall Gleeson, who delivered an exceptional Scottish accent. Moby's production company, Little Walnut Productions, also became involved, drawn to the film's values.
Looking ahead, Paxton is actively developing two new U.K.-set projects: a horror comedy and a straight comedy. He is also attached to direct "The Waffle House Index," a project with Apple, slated for production next year, which he describes as a unique and original script.
