A significant discovery has been made with the unearthing of a "lost masterpiece" by Italian sculptor Pietro Bracci, renowned for his work on Rome's Trevi Fountain. This 68cm tall maquette, depicting Pope Clement XII, was found by a collector in a salvage yard located in Wiltshire, England.
The artwork, stained, marked, and covered in lichen, is believed to have been languishing in a garden in Andover, Hampshire, for many decades. Its rediscovery marks a rare occasion, as such pieces seldom appear on the open market.
Scheduled for auction next week, the maquette's potential value is a subject of considerable speculation. Auctioneer Mark Yuan-Richards noted that while a comparable item sold for £170,000 in the past, the final price for this rediscovered gem remains uncertain.
