Summary
- Original sketches for Birmingham's giant bronze bull discovered.
- Drawings were found under a bed in sculptor Laurence Broderick's home.
- The collection of 14 signed sketches will be auctioned in March.

Original sketches for Birmingham's famous giant bronze bull sculpture, 'The Guardian', have been uncovered in a surprising find. These working drawings by the late sculptor Laurence Broderick were discovered tucked away under a bed at his home in Cambridgeshire.
The collection includes 14 signed A2 sketches, each dated July 2001, featuring Broderick's own annotations pointing to the chosen design. This chosen design was later transformed into the 4.5m long bronze statue erected in 2003 outside the Bullring shopping centre.
Broderick, who passed away in April 2024 at the age of 88, described the sculpture as a 'gateway emblem for Birmingham'. The sale, conducted by his wife, will take place on Saturday, March 7th, at Batemans Auctioneers in Stamford, Lincolnshire.
In addition to the sketches, the archive also contains 34 photographs of the maquette, a smaller-scale model used during the sculpture's preparation. The family has decided these items should be shared rather than kept stored away.
