Lost Quake 4 Expansion Found on Vintage PC

A significant piece of gaming history has resurfaced: a functional alpha of Quake 4's cancelled expansion, titled 'The Awakening.' This expansion, developed by Ritual Entertainment, was originally planned but never released, remaining largely unknown until 2017 when concept art emerged. Its existence was nearly forgotten, making its rediscovery even more remarkable.

The lost expansion was found by veteran game developer Justin Marshall on a vintage computer he purchased. He described the discovery as life-saving. As of this week, Marshall has made the alpha version publicly available for download. To run 'The Awakening,' players need a copy of the base Quake 4 game.

Gameplay footage has been shared online, showcasing surprisingly complete missions. The expansion features voice acting, though it may be placeholder audio. Levels appear detailed and largely finished. Notably, some missions involve piloting mechs and speeders, elements that might appeal to fans of more recent id Software titles.

Despite its historical significance, some aspects of 'The Awakening' feel dated, including graphics and uninspired military-themed writing reminiscent of other sci-fi franchises. Nevertheless, the rediscovery offers a fascinating glimpse into a piece of gaming history that could have been permanently lost.
