Lost Doctor Who Episodes Found in Nigeria!
16 Sep
Summary
- Over 100 Doctor Who episodes from the 1960s were missing.
- Nine classic Doctor Who episodes were discovered in Nigeria.
- A rare 'The Web of Fear' episode segment remains lost.
For much of television's history, old broadcasts were discarded, leading to the loss of cultural treasures. This was particularly true for early Doctor Who episodes.
Decades later, a specialist named Philip Morris, known for finding lost television material, followed a paper trail to a Nigerian television relay station. There, he discovered film cans containing Doctor Who episodes.
Eleven canisters were found, yielding nine Doctor Who episodes that had been missing for nearly half a century. These episodes featured Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor and were originally broadcast between December 1967 and March 1968. The discovery greatly reduced the total number of missing episodes.
Despite the major find, one episode, the third part of 'The Web of Fear,' could not be recovered and is believed to have been sold. The recovery highlights that old television material may still exist in unexpected places.
