The London Museum is set to unveil its new home in the grand Smithfield Market on November 28. This significant project, costing £437m, relocates the museum from its former London Wall site into the expansive Victorian market building. The new venue promises to be more than just a display space, incorporating areas for social activities like dinner clubs and club nights, with Thameslink trains even passing through its basement levels.
The museum's design divides the Smithfield General Market building into three distinct zones. 'Real Time' will serve as the entrance, showcasing live data about London. 'Our Time,' located beneath the market's dome, will host events and feature 13 large installations reflecting London's living memory. 'Past Time,' in the basement, will offer permanent chronological and thematic displays of London's history.
Among the key artifacts on display will be Syd's Coffee Stall, Paul Simonon's iconic bass guitar from The Clash's 'London Calling' album, the Cheapside Hoard jewellery collection, Anna Pavlova's costume for 'The Dying Swan,' and Tom Daley's diving goggles from the 2012 Olympics. The Poultry Market building is slated for a later opening in 2028.
