The 79th Locarno Film Festival, scheduled from August 5 to August 16, is set to feature a global array of adventurous cinema, with a significant presence of Swiss films and co-productions. The festival's "Panorama Suisse" section will highlight Swiss movies that have achieved success at other festivals, in cinemas, or are currently released. Additionally, the Locarno Kids Screenings will include two titles with Swiss participation, broadening the appeal.
The festival is showcasing several notable films. "The Chilean," a political thriller co-produced by Switzerland, Italy, and Chile, explores themes of immigration and political exile in 1976 Chile. "Happiness Is So Close!" stars an aging actor grappling with his understudy, with the film's lead set to receive an honorary Leopard.
Other Swiss-involved productions include "Small Talk," a hybrid feature examining elite social dynamics at a Swiss finishing school, and "O Jacaré," a vibrant film by a Swiss-Portuguese director set in a Lisbon suburb. The documentary series "The Angel Maker" delves into the controversial Methernitha religious community in Switzerland, its founder, and accusations of child abuse.
"Frank & Louis," an English-language debut by a Swiss director, focuses on the care needs of aging incarcerated individuals in a U.S. prison. While its world premiere was at Sundance, it will receive a prominent screening at Locarno. Jean-Luc Bideau will be honored with a special Leopard for his contributions.
