Liza Minnelli reveals complex affair with Martin Scorsese

Liza Minnelli is reflecting on her intense affair with Martin Scorsese, describing it as an "amour fou" or self-destructive obsession.

Their passionate romance began while working on the 1977 film "New York, New York," despite both being married at the time. Minnelli noted their shared Italian heritage contributed to their intense, passionate connection, admitting, "Our love affair had more layers than a lasagna."

The relationship was further complicated by simultaneous struggles with cocaine addiction, which Minnelli states made matters worse for both of them. She recalls being a constant companion to Scorsese during his drug use.

Following their collaboration on "New York, New York," Minnelli hired Scorsese to direct her Broadway musical "The Act." However, she eventually had to fire him, citing his struggles with theater direction and his exhaustion.

Minnelli expressed relief that Scorsese eventually recovered from his addiction and has enjoyed a long, successful career. However, she recalled a distant encounter at the 2014 Oscars, where Scorsese reportedly turned away from her, indicating some past feelings remain unresolved.
