For over 1400 years, Liuyang, Hunan province, has been at the heart of China's Spring Festival celebrations, renowned for its fireworks and firecrackers. This tradition, dating back to the invention by Li Tian in 621 AD to ward off evil, has evolved significantly. By the Song Dynasty, Hunan's firecracker production thrived, with Liuyang's creations becoming imperial tribute items.
Today, Liuyang's manufacturing techniques, a national intangible cultural heritage since 2006, merge traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology. Spectacular displays, including drone and fireworks shows that have broken world records, now light up the skies. These events attract millions, contributing over 20 billion yuan ($2.89 billion) to the local economy.
During the recent Spring Festival holiday, Liuyang companies staged over 500 shows nationwide, setting new records for both events and revenue. The city's focus on safety and environmentally friendly materials, such as sulfur dioxide-free options, enhances its appeal in international markets, including the United States and the United Arab Emirates.
In 2025, Liuyang accounted for 70 percent of China's total firecracker and fireworks exports, reaching more than 100 countries and regions. Despite urban density challenges, Liuyang continues to innovate, ensuring its pyrotechnic heritage illuminates celebrations worldwide.
