Lithuanian 'Straw Gardens' Blossom in Delhi

At the National Crafts Museum, Lithuanian artist Vida Snieckuviene presented her captivating 'sodai,' delicate ornaments meticulously crafted from rye stalks. These intricate, geometric structures, resembling aerial pyramids, carry profound sacral meanings, symbolizing a model of the universe and evoking themes of abundance and cosmic connection.

Ambassador Diana Mickeviciene underscored the deep cultural significance of this tradition, explaining that 'sodai' are believed to mirror the universal pattern and are associated with prosperity, harmony, and fertility. Snieckuviene shared that these fragile creations are traditionally made in silence and hung in homes for various occasions, from blessing newborns to adorning spaces during holidays.

The exhibition also highlighted the upcoming "People to People Connections" year between Lithuania and India in 2025-26. Attendees, including Odissi exponent Sharon Lowen, praised the fragile art form's ability to connect personal feelings with collective cultural identity, with some noting its ancient origins.
