In her latest album "West End Girl," British singer-songwriter Lily Allen has laid bare the struggles of her 4-year marriage to "Stranger Things" actor David Harbour. According to Allen, the couple had an open relationship, but Harbour still violated many of their agreed-upon boundaries.
"There are usually agreed-upon boundaries in relationships," Allen told The Times in a recent interview. "But whether those boundaries are adhered to or not is becoming a grey area all of a sudden." She believes dating apps have made people more "disposable," leading to the idea that if you're unhappy, there are endless options to choose from.
Allen and Harbour met in 2019 and married the following year, with Allen moving herself and her daughters to New York. On the album, Allen sings about "having an arrangement" with Harbour to "be discreet" and that extramarital relationships had to be with strangers. However, the singer says the reality did not align with their agreement.
Allen acknowledges that the way we define intimacy and monogamy is evolving, with many young women no longer finding the idea of marriage or long-term relationships appealing. But she's quick to point out that this shift may not necessarily be a negative thing, as her parents' generation often stayed together despite being miserable.
