Lila Avilés, acclaimed director of the Berlin Golden Bear winner "Totém," has completed her latest feature, "Cábula." The film is set to be presented at the Venice Gap-Financing Market from September 4-6. It tells the story of Toña, a devoted teacher in the fictional Mexican town of Mexicalpan, who inspires creativity in her students.
When an invitation leads Toña and her class to the capital, they encounter elites aiming to exploit their traditions. Despite facing challenges and betrayals, Toña remains steadfast in her belief in education's power. Avilés stated that the film employs comedy as a form of resistance, using humor as an escape valve to question power structures.
"Cábula" is produced by Nicolás Celis, known for his work on "Roma." The film stars veteran Mexican actress Teresita Sánchez, whom Avilés considers her muse. Sánchez portrays Toña, a figure whose quiet strength provides a moral anchor against surrounding chaos and celebrates the often-anonymous heroes of underfunded education systems.
