Lil Wayne Defeats Lawyer's Multimillion-Dollar Claim in Court

In a significant legal victory for Lil Wayne, a New York judge has ruled in his favor in a long-running dispute with his former attorney, Ron Sweeney. The two have been locked in a court battle for over seven years over a contingency fee arrangement that originally entitled Sweeney to 10% of Wayne's profits.

Wayne first sued Sweeney in 2019, claiming the 10% fee was "exorbitant" and that the verbal agreement was void since he had fired Sweeney in 2018. Sweeney countersued, seeking $20 million from deals that went through after his termination, including Wayne's confidential royalty settlement with Cash Money Records and an alleged sale of Young Money master recordings to Universal Music Group.

However, the judge sided with Wayne, ruling that Sweeney is not entitled to a contingency fee on any money that came through after he was fired. The judge stated that Sweeney can only pursue "reasonable fees" from Wayne, and the question of what constitutes reasonable fees will now move forward into evidence discovery.
