Young Liberians Revive History on TikTok

For generations, Liberia's history was preserved through the spoken words of its elders. Today, a new generation of Liberians is adapting this oral tradition for the digital age, utilizing platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, and podcasts to share their heritage. This effort aims to reach both domestic audiences and the diaspora, carrying forward a legacy of storytelling.

The nation's civil wars, which occurred between 1989 and 2003, severely disrupted the traditional transmission of historical and cultural knowledge. This intergenerational chain, vital for maintaining community identity, was broken by the conflict's widespread displacement and loss of life.

These digital spaces are becoming the new gathering points, akin to traditional "palava huts," where stories once shared in close-knit communities can now reach a global audience instantly. Creators are documenting traditions and challenging external narratives about Liberia's past.

However, this digital preservation faces hurdles. Limited internet access affects participation, with just over a third of Liberians online. Furthermore, the open nature of social media presents challenges with misinformation, as content is often shared without rigorous vetting by elders, unlike in traditional griot practices.

Efforts are underway to support these young storytellers. The Liberia Tourism Authority is collaborating with experts and content creators to enhance access to historical resources and promote accurate, engaging narratives about Liberia's past.

The responsibility to preserve history continues, adapting to new mediums. The future of Liberian history may increasingly be shaped and shared through digital uploads, reflecting a dynamic evolution of cultural transmission.
