The psychological suspense drama "Lex Julia," directed by Laura Hyppönen, premiered on November 13th at Estonia's 30th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. The film is also scheduled to screen at the 41st Mar del Plata International Film Festival in Argentina. It stars Rea Lest, Christian Hillborg, and Jessica Grabowsky.
The narrative centers on a rape survivor who encounters her alleged attacker years later on an isolated island. Set against this pressure-cooker environment, the film dissects the conflicting perspectives of the victim, the accused, and his wife. It questions perceptions of sexual violence, shame, and responsibility.
Inspired by personal experiences, Hyppönen aimed to subvert the rape-revenge genre's conventions. The story begins calmly as the protagonist visits a friend, but tension escalates with the appearance of the friend's husband, who is recognized from the survivor's past. This encounter unearths hidden truths and creates a volatile triangle.
A co-production between Finland, Poland, Estonia, and Sweden, "Lex Julia" is set for a theatrical release in Finland in January. Producers highlight the film's exploration of trauma, truth, and fractured memories within a compelling suspenseful framework. The film's themes of abusive behavior and gendered violence are deemed particularly relevant in the current cultural climate.
