Lewes Bonfire Night: Electric Atmosphere Anticipated

Lewes is preparing for its famed annual Bonfire Night, an event expected to draw tens of thousands of visitors on Thursday. The town's atmosphere is described as "electric" by local businesses, anticipating a surge in crowds. This significant celebration includes parades featuring effigies, which conclude with a large bonfire and fireworks display.

Law enforcement agencies are deploying substantial resources to manage the event, including specialist and armed officers to ensure public safety and prevent disorder. Last year's celebration saw three arrests and seven hospitalizations, prompting a strong police presence this year. Emergency services, including the fire department, are also on standby for potential incidents.

Significant travel disruptions are in effect to manage the influx of visitors. Road closures are in place throughout the town, and train services to Lewes and surrounding stations will be suspended from late Thursday afternoon until early Friday morning. Residents are advised to consider local events, and visitors are urged to stay away if possible.
