The independent film 'Kabelo,' a Sesotho-language adventure-drama, is set to premiere at the 8th Joburg Film Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa. Directed by Carl Houston Mc Millan, the film is an official in-competition selection, highlighting its rarity as a feature from Lesotho.
'Kabelo' delves into themes of migration, identity, and the pursuit of freedom. The narrative centers on a young shepherd named Kabelo who yearns to leave his isolated village life. He forms a bond with a South African fugitive, who promises him a new beginning in Johannesburg.
Mc Millan, who grew up in Lesotho and has a deep connection to its landscapes, drew inspiration from his experiences and a profound respect for shepherds. The film evolved from a short titled 'Sir and Kabelo (Two Shepherds),' and was co-written with his wife, Tara Desormeaux.
The production faced challenges, particularly during filming in Lesotho's mountains during winter. However, the team utilized their knowledge of the terrain and social capital to capture stunning visuals, including a memorable cave scene, emphasizing the harsh beauty of the Lesotho landscape.
"Kabelo" proudly showcases Basotho talent, with nearly all cast members, except for award-winning actor Warren Masemola, being from Lesotho. The film aims to present a high-quality Sesotho-language production that resonates with both local and international audiences, advocating for greater film industry presence in Lesotho.
