Leon Thomas Reinvents R&B with Guitar & Funk

Leon Thomas, recently honored with two Grammys, has firmly established himself as a leading R&B solo artist. His transition from a producer for artists like Drake to a guitar-soloing superstar is now recognized with awards for best R&B album and best traditional R&B performance. These accolades follow his 2024 Grammy win for co-writing SZA's hit "Snooze."

Thomas is redefining R&B by incorporating psychedelic rock and a strong emphasis on live musicianship, inspired by his guitar heroes Prince and Jimi Hendrix. He aims to keep the spirit of innovators like D'Angelo alive by challenging the genre's status quo, particularly in anticipation of AI's impact on modern music.

His musical journey began with a background in acting, including roles in "The Lion King" and "Victorious," where he also wrote songs. After refining his production skills and songwriting with mentors like Babyface, Thomas launched his solo career. His 2023 album "Electric Dusk" and subsequent work like his EP "Pholks" highlight his artistic evolution.

Thomas draws inspiration from his upbringing surrounded by classic rock and funk, influenced by his parents and grandfather. He feels empowered to blend genres freely, unlike earlier generations who fought for inclusion in rock music. He also collaborated with Disclosure on a UK garage track.

He has collaborated with numerous prominent artists, including Ariana Grande and Post Malone, and even worked on Kanye West's "Vultures" project. Thomas is recognized for bridging generations, performing in a tribute to Sly Stone at the personal request of Stevie Wonder. He is consciously carrying the legacy of Black musical genius forward.
