Leo Ray, a celebrated colorist, painter, graphic artist, and sculptor, was born in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 1950. After immigrating to Israel in 1991, he quickly became a notable figure in the local art scene, exhibiting widely both in Israel and abroad. Ray's distinctive artistic style features short, impactful messages and defined, vibrant colors, intended to bring joy and a sense of childlike wonder to viewers.
His compositions frequently blend everyday subjects like animals and people with references to Renaissance and classical art. Ray's technique involves layering oil, acrylic, and gouache, creating rich textures and defined forms. He also works in black and white, drawing inspiration from his early training in calligraphy.
For over thirty years, until the COVID-19 pandemic, Ray was a dedicated art educator. He taught at institutions including Art School Ein Vered and BASIS School of Sculpture in Beit Yanai, where he also led the painting program from 2006 to 2014. He continues to paint daily, exploring an "infinite painting" practice where canvases flow into one another.
Ray views art as a powerful tool for happiness, especially in difficult times. He believes his work, which often depicts familiar motifs in a dreamlike, slightly distorted manner, successfully awakens the child within the viewer.
