Lena Dunham has introduced a novel approach to her book tour for "Famesick," her second memoir. Instead of traditional, demanding tours, Dunham has opted for intimate events held on stage, set up to resemble her bedroom. This decision stems from her experiences with chronic illness, including endometriosis and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and a desire for a more comfortable and playful promotional experience.
Reflecting on her previous book tour for "Not That Kind of Girl," Dunham described it as overwhelming and boundary-less. For "Famesick," she curated a more controlled experience, including virtual events and select in-person stops on the East and West Coasts, as well as in London. All interviews and events are conducted from a bed, a deliberate choice to approximate her personal space.
Dunham has also adapted other aspects of book promotion to accommodate her health needs. She recorded the audiobook from her couch and designed book stamps to avoid the discomfort of signing numerous books. Her events feature conversations with guests like Michael Lewis and Emily Ratajkowski, encouraging a relaxed atmosphere where even pajamas are welcomed.
During her Brooklyn Academy of Music event, Dunham engaged with her audience through readings, games, and a guided meditation. She also demonstrated her evolved self-acceptance by offering her vintage Valentino shoes to a fan, a gesture symbolizing her comfort in her own skin and her desire to share joy.
