Legendary Japanese Actress Yoshinaga Sayuri Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

The Tokyo International Film Festival has announced that legendary Japanese actress Yoshinaga Sayuri will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the festival's 38th edition, running from October 27th to November 5th, 2025. The accolade comes as Sayuri stars in this year's TIFF opening film, "Climbing for Life," in which she portrays the first woman to conquer Mount Everest.

Sayuri's remarkable career spans over six decades, with her film debut dating back to 1959's "Asa o yobu kuchibue." Over the years, she has established herself as a pillar of Japanese cinema, winning the Japan Academy Film Prize for best leading actress multiple times. Her acclaimed performances include roles in films like "Ohan," "Station to Heaven," and "Nagasaki: Memories of My Son."

In addition to her acting prowess, Sayuri has also produced acclaimed works, such as "Cape Nostalgia," which won both the jury grand prix and the ecumenical jury prize at the Montreal World Film Festival. The Japanese government has recognized her contributions to the arts, naming her a Person of Cultural Merit and bestowing the Medal with Purple Ribbon.

As the Tokyo International Film Festival celebrates its 38th edition, the organizers are thrilled to honor Sayuri's remarkable journey and her portrayal of the pioneering female mountaineer in "Climbing for Life." The festival will take place across Tokyo's Hibiya-Yurakucho-Marunouchi-Ginza area, with the TIFFCOM market running from October 29th to 31st.
