Legendary Bengali Actor Victor Banerjee Reflects on 78th Birthday and Storied Career

Veteran Bengali actor Victor Banerjee celebrated his 78th birthday on the current date. In an interview, the legendary performer looked back on his extensive career, which has spanned both Bengali and Hindi films.

Banerjee shared that he is not fond of being reminded of his birthdays, as it serves as a "reminder that your time to go is approaching." However, the actor graciously spoke with the interviewer about his experiences in the industry.

When asked about his limited appearances in Hindi cinema, Banerjee explained that the Hindi film roles were more "fly-by-nights" in his career. He recounted how he landed a role in the film "Bhoot" simply by being in the right place at the right time. Banerjee's acclaimed performance in Shyam Benegal's "Kalyug" had left an impression on director Ram Gopal Varma, leading to the "Bhoot" opportunity.

Interestingly, Banerjee revealed that director Subhash Ghai was not satisfied with his performance in the film "Joggers' Park." Ghai had wanted Banerjee's character to be more "like James Bond," a suave figure that would captivate female audiences. However, Banerjee had interpreted the role with a more melancholic, subtle approach, which did not align with Ghai's vision.

Despite these creative differences, Banerjee's acclaimed work in films like David Lean's "A Passage to India" remains a high point in his illustrious career. The actor shared that Lean had specifically sought him out for the role of Dr. Aziz, after hearing positive reviews of Banerjee's performance in Satyajit Ray's "Ghaire Baire."

As Banerjee looks towards the future, he expresses readiness for a new phase in his career, having moved on from the Bengali film industry. The veteran actor remains hopeful that opportunities in Bollywood may arise, particularly if directors like Sanjay Leela Bhansali recognize his talent and interest in taking on diverse roles.
