The German electronic duo Mouse On Mars has released Spatial, No Problem., a posthumous collaborative album featuring the iconic dub artist Lee "Scratch" Perry. The eight-track collection was recorded over four intense days in Berlin during December 2019.
Initially, Perry, then 83, was expected to work only three hours a day. However, he worked from morning until late night, exhibiting remarkable energy. Perry passed away on August 29, 2021, at age 85 in Jamaica.
Mouse On Mars considered abandoning the project after Perry's death, feeling their time with him was a gift. However, encouraged by collaborator Louis Chude-Sokei, they completed the album seven years after its recording.
Spatial, No Problem. represents a confluence of styles, melding dub, free jazz, and electronic elements. The album includes tracks like "Fire Dali," referencing Perry's former studio destruction, and "State of Emergency," where Perry recounts stories of reggae legends.
The duo utilized AI to render elements of Perry's voice, with his widow's approval. This reflects Perry's lifelong exploration of new sounds and ideas, continuing his legacy as a pioneer in music and Afrofuturism.
