League of Legends' Nostalgia Trip: Classic Mode Arrives!

League of Legends is set to launch its "Classic" game client, offering players a journey back to the game's early days. This new mode focuses on characters and gameplay from the game's first three seasons, specifically the period between 2009 and 2013. Riot Games has based this revival on Season 3, incorporating features from the prior two seasons with some modern enhancements, such as improved lighting and textures on the original Summoner's Rift map.

The Classic mode will feature the original Summoner's Rift, along with 40 characters from the 2009 debut and an additional 20 selected from the game's first four years. Iconic items, runes, builds, and mechanics from this era, like Atmogs, are also returning. Players can unlock characters through a new "Classic Level" progression system, which runs parallel to the main game's progression. A further system, "Summoner's Journey," begins at Classic Level 10, allowing players to earn items without competitive pressure.

League of Legends Classic will debut with player-versus-player draft queues, co-op, and custom game modes. Runes and Masteries will be pre-selected and unlocked via gameplay, set to an old Tier 3 baseline without upgrades. Although the mode aims to evoke the game's past, Riot plans to implement patches and balance updates based on player feedback, with a preference for higher-ranked Classic players. This initiative contrasts with the anticipated "League Next" update in 2027, which promises significant future changes to graphics, gameplay, and technology to attract new players.
