As CBS prepares to launch its new crime drama 'CIA' in the coming months, the show has undergone a significant cast change. According to sources, Michael Michele, one of the series' lead actors, has departed the production just over a month into filming. The show, which was picked up by the network in April, is now targeting a midseason premiere.
This is the second major change on 'CIA' in recent months. Over the summer, the series also saw a showrunner switch, with Warren Leight replacing FBI: Most Wanted showrunner David Hudgins. The show centers on an unlikely partnership between a fast-talking, rule-breaking CIA case officer, played by Tom Ellis, and a by-the-book, seasoned FBI agent, portrayed by Nick Gehlfuss. Together, they must navigate their differences to investigate cases and criminals posing threats on U.S. soil.
While there are rumblings that Michele's role may be recast, that has not been confirmed at this time. The actress has a long history with the show's executive producer, Dick Wolf, having previously recurred on his series New York Undercover. She most recently appeared in a recurring role on another CBS/Universal TV crime drama, The Equalizer.
Despite these behind-the-scenes changes, the network remains committed to the project, which is being produced by Universal Television in association with Wolf Entertainment and CBS Studios. Eriq La Salle is set to direct and executive produce the pilot episode.
