Reid Scott Exits Law & Order; James Badge Dale Joins
23 Jul
Summary
- Reid Scott departs as Senior Detective Vincent Riley after three seasons.
- James Badge Dale will join as a new Senior Detective, replacing Riley.
- The transition involves filming episodes to properly conclude Riley's arc.

NBC's venerable crime drama Law & Order is experiencing a notable cast transition with the departure of Reid Scott, who has played Senior Detective Vincent Riley for the past three seasons. Scott's exit is said to be his own decision, influenced by the challenges of a cross-country commute and extended time away from his family during the nine months of annual filming in New York.
The series is prepared to introduce a high-profile replacement, with James Badge Dale set to step into a new Senior Detective role. Dale, recognized for his work on "24" and "1923," will effectively succeed Scott's character. The production plans a proper send-off for Detective Riley, with Scott returning to film concluding episodes for the character's storyline before Dale's character is integrated.
Law & Order has a history of annual cast changes, with Scott's character most recently partnered with Junior Detective Theo Walker. His predecessor, Junior Detective Jalen Shaw, was played by Mehcad Brooks. Scott himself had taken over the role from Jeffrey Donovan. The upcoming Season 26, premiering October 8, will see Dale joining returning cast members Tony Goldwyn, Hugh Dancy, Maura Tierney, and Odelya Halevi.
