Latitude Festival: 20 Years of Music, Mayhem & Moments

The Latitude Festival in Suffolk is commemorating its 20th anniversary, marking a significant evolution since its 2006 inception with just 4,500 daily attendees. Today, it draws an impressive 45,000 people each day, a testament to its growth and enduring appeal.

Over two decades, Latitude has featured performances from music legends including Tom Jones, Ed Sheeran, and Florence + The Machine. The 2024 event will see headliners David Byrne, Teddy Swims, and Lewis Capaldi. Memorable moments include Thom Yorke's rare solo set in 2009 and Ed Sheeran's early performance in a poetry tent in 2010, just before his debut album release.

Despite its successes, the festival has faced challenges. Safety concerns arose in 2010 and 2019 with reports of sexual assaults. In 2022, a former steward was jailed for an incident involving a teenager. Animal rights groups also criticized the festival in 2019 for dyeing sheep pink, though organizers stated the dye was harmless.

The festival's history includes unexpected moments, like a festival-goer joining The Darkness on stage in 2024 due to a shared school history. Latitude has also championed new talent through initiatives like BBC Introducing, first established in 2010. The event was recognized as Best Major Festival at the UK Festival Awards in 2017.
