The season finale of "Lanterns," titled "Dirt and Stars," resolved the mystery of who killed Hal Jordan. It was revealed that Noah, the second Manhunter, murdered Hal to prevent him from exposing Noah's dual identity as a Manhunter and a Yellow Lantern to Kerry. Kerry, Hal's love interest, is revealed to be Noah's mother and also a Manhunter, having used the technology after a previous injury.
In the present, John Stewart confronts Sinestro, learning Noah freed him and Sinestro created a yellow ring for Noah. John, guided by a hologram of Hal, refuses Sinestro's offer to charge his ring. Noah ambushes John, confessing his actions and asking John to kill him. John ultimately lets Noah go, and Noah goes on to play football at the University of Nebraska.
John Stewart accepts the mantle of Earth's Green Lantern, operating independently. He recharges Hal's ring with a new oath embracing fear. John reunites with his family and makes amends by providing restitution to a waitress who lost her family in a Manhunter attack. The season ends setting up John's role in the upcoming "Superman" sequel.
