A significant sister painting to Sir Edwin Landseer's renowned 'Monarch of the Glen,' known as 'Scene in Braemar,' is anticipated to achieve up to £4m at a London auction next month. This commanding artwork, depicting a 12-point stag on a Highland peak, was originally commissioned in 1859 by industrialist Edward Ladd Betts for £800, a sum above Landseer's requested fee.
The painting, described as a darker, more epic vision than 'Monarch of the Glen,' has resided in various private collections since Betts sold it during a banking crisis in 1868. It last appeared at auction in 1994, selling for £793,500. Sotheby's now estimates its value between £3m and £4m.
'Scene in Braemar' is substantial, measuring almost 9ft, and has been praised as a masterpiece. Although less famous than 'Monarch of the Glen,' it was considered a worthy partner by The Times in 1857 and lauded by Beatrix Potter. The work has been exhibited publicly, including in Edinburgh in 2005 alongside its famous counterpart.
