Summary
- Wagner embraces a minimalist acoustic setup for Lambchop's latest work.
- The new album features guest appearances from Justin Vernon and Ryan Olson.
- Harmonies evoke country-gospel hymns despite unconventional lyrics.

Kurt Wagner, the acclaimed songwriter behind Lambchop, has once again reshaped his band's sound. The latest album, 'Punching the Clown,' features a minimalist acoustic setup, stripping away previous studio experimentation for a more direct and raw approach.
This evolution sees Wagner accompanied by co-writer Andrew Broder on acoustic guitar and Justin Vernon on banjo. The album was produced by Ryan Olson at Justin Vernon's April Base studio in Wisconsin. Percussion is sparse and unique, with elements like castanets and sounds resembling breaking glass adding unconventional texture.
A notable feature of 'Punching the Clown' is the collaboration with the London Choir and the Eau Claires Vocal Sextet. These vocalists provide harmonies that lend the songs a country-gospel feel, creating a striking contrast with Wagner's often unconventional and modern lyrical themes.
Despite the simpler sonic palette, Wagner's characteristic storytelling remains expansive and compelling. Tracks like the title song build around an autumnal guitar, while others offer intimate and beautiful soundscapes. The album represents a return to intuitive forms, resulting in Lambchop's most distinct sound to date.
