Debut Film 'Kakthet' Secures INR40 Lakh Funding

Stenzin Tankyong's debut feature film, 'Kakthet' (Idiot), has won the inaugural INR40 lakh ($42,000) feature film co-production fund. The project, set in Ladakh, was chosen from almost 400 submissions. The film chronicles the uncertain future of a government school and its community, hinging on one unmotivated tenth-grade student. Teachers must endeavor to save the school by engaging this resistant student.

Tankyong, known for his work highlighting Ladakh's culture, has previously screened shorts at international festivals. 'Kakthet' is produced by Ritu Sarin and Rajesh Thanickan, with French co-producers. The project had already gained industry recognition, securing a grant at WAVES Film Bazaar in 2025 and selection for the 2026 Asian Project Market.

The fund was launched by Harshit Bansal and Nazim Momin. Filmmakers Vishal Bhardwaj and Shaunak Sen are attached as mentors. The jury included Imran Khan and Arati Kadav. Bansal noted the need for such initiatives in South Asia, praising Tankyong's distinct voice. Bhardwaj expressed excitement for the project's focus on non-mainstream voices, while Sen highlighted the script's blend of lightness and absurdity.

Tankyong expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing the challenge for regional stories to find backing. He thanked Humans of Cinema and Safarnaama Pictures for the opportunity. The screenplay is in its fourth draft, with location scouting completed in July 2026. The team is now focused on securing additional financing and co-production partnerships globally.
