Filmmaker Anees Bazmee has opened up about the emotionally taxing experience of reshooting the 1994 film Laadla following the tragic death of actress Divya Bharti. The team had completed approximately 90-95% of the movie with Bharti before her passing on April 5, 1993. Her death left the entire production team devastated, halting work for two months.
Producer Boney Kapoor then enlisted Sridevi to take over the lead role, a part she had previously rejected in both Tamil and Telugu adaptations. Bazmee revised the script, focusing on Sridevi's character's perspective, which convinced her to accept the role. This resulted in a more elevated film, according to Bazmee.
Bharti's death also impacted the filming of Angrakshak, another project where reshoots were required. Bazmee recalled filming a chilling final scene with Bharti where her character pleaded for help, just a day before she died after falling from her Mumbai apartment balcony at age 19.
