"La Bola Negra" spans three distinct periods in Spanish history, with narratives set in 1932, 1937, and 2017, each exploring themes of belonging, connection, and uncovering hidden truths. The film draws inspiration from Lorca's writings and an unfinished play of the same name, bringing his exploration of desire to contemporary audiences.
The film has achieved significant international recognition, securing the best director prize at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. This victory marked a historic moment, as it was the first Netflix title and the first international film in 15 years to win the festival's top prize. "La Bola Negra" is also Spain's official submission for the Academy Award for International Feature Film.
"La Bola Negra" began its theatrical run in New York City and Los Angeles on October 16, with plans for wider release across the United States and Canada. Select venues will offer screenings in 35mm format. The film is scheduled to be available on Netflix in the United States and Canada starting December 2.
