Kyotographie, Japan's foremost international photography festival, has opened its annual event, this year exploring the broad theme of "Edge." The festival presents 14 main exhibitions and numerous satellite events, offering a wide spectrum of photographic art.
Among the featured artists is Daido Moriyama, whose retrospective showcases his prolific career and his influential 'are-bure-boke' style from the postwar era. British artist Linder Sterling's work, rooted in punk fanzines and feminist photomontages, is also highlighted.
A significant exhibition focuses on Thandiwe Muriu from Kenya, who uses traditional kitenge fabric to explore themes of identity and female empowerment. The festival also honors Palestinian photographer Fatma Hassona, whose poignant images of life in Gaza were tragically cut short when she was killed in an airstrike on April 16, 2025.
Additional exhibitions include a look at Ernest Cole's groundbreaking book 'House of Bondage,' documenting apartheid in South Africa. The KG+ festival and Kyotophonie music program expand the creative energy throughout Kyoto.
