The narrative is set during Japan's tumultuous Sengoku period. It centers on Araki Murashige, a warlord who defied Oda Nobunaga. His castle becomes isolated, and internal order deteriorates due to mysterious crimes.
Araki forms a tentative alliance with Kuroda Kanbei, a captive strategist, to find a traitor. This race against time occurs as Oda's forces close in on the besieged stronghold.
Director Kurosawa Kiyoshi expressed his surprise and happiness about the film's Cannes selection, hoping its themes resonate universally. The film was produced by Shochiku in association with Tokyo Broadcasting System Television.
