Disfigured Chicken Novel: A Dark Fable

Andrew Upton, known for his work with Cate Blanchett and their film company, has authored his debut novel, Krank Fuss. This allegorical tale centers on a disfigured chicken navigating a farmyard hierarchy, drawing parallels to George Orwell's Animal Farm. The narrative is framed as a fable penned by a World War I veteran for his daughter, discovered posthumously.

The novel's setting is a farm in Nazi Germany, where anthropomorphized animals experience escalating violence and powerlessness. Upton drew inspiration from his own experiences keeping chickens and observing their reactions to being handled, alongside reflections on historical conflicts and his father's RAF service.

While inspired by children's literature like Winnie-the-Pooh, Krank Fuss contains graphic depictions of animal conflict and suffering. It explores themes of being trapped within systems, the futility of internal conflict, and the looming human-induced violence of World War II. The work is characterized as a layered fable with elements of darkness and humor.

Upton, who previously co-artistic directed the Sydney Theatre Company, treated fiction writing as a new frontier. He shared the completed manuscript, Krank Fuss, with his wife, Cate Blanchett, and his eldest son, Dashiell, before its release. The author expresses excitement about this new creative avenue, feeling it has opened up unexpected possibilities in his later career.
