Disney+ has commenced production on "The Koreans," a new series inspired by the FX drama "The Americans." Lee Byung-hun and Han Jimin are set to star as North Korean operatives living in secret within South Korea.
The series is set during the early 1990s, a period of significant democratization and cultural change in South Korea. It centers on a seemingly ordinary middle-class family who are, in reality, elite North Korean agents tasked with destabilizing the South. The narrative will explore the spies' internal conflicts regarding their homeland, their identities, and their family relationships as they try to evade a persistent Korean counterintelligence agent.
Directed by Ahn Gilho, the show features Lee Byung-hun, known for "Squid Game," and Han Jimin, recognized for "Heavenly Ever After." The screenplay is adapted by Park Eunkyo from the original series created by Joe Weisberg. The original "The Americans" received critical acclaim, including a Golden Globe in 2019.
"The Koreans" will be available internationally on Disney+ and on Hulu in the United States. This project is part of Disney+'s growing collection of Korean content, which includes titles like "Made in Korea" and "Tempest," with several other Korean originals in development.
