Konkani Theatre's Remarkable Renaissance: From Stones to Stages

Konkani theatre's journey has been nothing short of remarkable. In the 1970s, the art form faced contempt and strife, with Konkani troupe members being abused and their vehicles pelted with stones. However, over the past 50 years, Konkani theatre has undergone a remarkable transformation, establishing itself as a beloved institution.

The first Konkani drama competition, held in 1976-77, was a significant milestone, signaling the arrival of Konkani theatre. Veteran playwright Pundalik Naik laid the foundation with plays that echoed the voice of the people, and the establishment of Goa Kala Academy's school of drama provided the infrastructure to nurture talent.

Today, as the Golden Jubilee edition of the Konkani drama competition kicks off, the language that once invited violence now commands respect. Konkani theatre has become the "darling of rural Goa," with single productions running for 100 shows during zatras, kales, and Ganeshotsav programmes. The Goa Konkani Akademi has played a crucial role in this transformation, taking award-winning plays directly to rural audiences.

While there are still challenges to be addressed, the optimism surrounding Konkani theatre is palpable. Eminent theatre personality Ajit Kerkar believes that Konkani theatre has "conquered hearts at the state-level" and that global recognition is inevitable, likening it to being "crowned Miss Goa" and awaiting the "Miss Universe crown."
